Learn About the Hijri Months
﴿ إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِندَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ
يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الدِّينُ
الْقَيِّمُ... ﴾
Allah made twelve months in a year. Four of these months are sacred and special. This is

Surah At-Tawbah - Ayah 36
Muharram - محرم
It is the first month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. In this month, Allah saved Moses and his people from Pharaoh and his army. It also includes the Day of Ashura, and fasting on this day is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Jumada al-Ula - جماد الاولى
The Battle of Mu'tah took place during this month. It was the first major confrontation between the Muslims and the Byzantine Empire and its allies.
Rajab - رجب
It is one of the four sacred months. The Battle of Tabuk took place during this month, and it was the last military expedition of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Sha'ban - شعبان
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast frequently during this month in preparation for the arrival of Ramadan.
Ramadan - رمضان
It is the month of fasting. During this month, Allah revealed the Holy Qur'an. It also contains Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree), which is better than a thousand months. The Battle of Badr also took place during this month, in which the Muslims were victorious over the Quraysh disbelievers. During this month, the Conquest of Makkah also occurred, when the Prophet Muhammad entered Makkah victorious after years of being prevented, along with his companions, from entering it.
Shawwal - شوال
This month begins with Eid al-Fitr, during which Muslims celebrate the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan.
Dhu al-Qa'dah - ذو القعدة
The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah took place during this month. It was an agreement that established peace between the Muslims and Quraysh and became a reason for the spread of Islam.
Dhu al-Hijjah - ذو الحجة
During this month, Muslims perform the rites of Hajj, including standing at Mount Arafah on the Day of Arafah, one of the greatest days of the year. Muslims also celebrate Eid al-Adha during this month.
